Portalis, Joseph-Marie, count
(1778-1858)
   political figure
   Born in Aix, the son of jean-étienne-marie portalis, Joseph-Marie Portalis served as secretary-general of cults (1805), then as director general of the press and publishing during the first empire. Adviser to the Court of Cassation and a peer under the Restoration, he served in the liberal ministry of the count of martignac as keeper of the seals, then as foreign minister (1828-29).
